Web Data vs APIs: Choosing a Source for Lead Research
When an API is the right source, and when public web data fills the gap.
Two ways to collect lead data
Lead research needs company information from somewhere. There are two broad routes: official APIs and licensed datasets that provide structured data on request, and public web data, where information published on websites is collected and organised.
When an API is the better choice
APIs are documented, stable and permitted by design. If a provider offers an API that covers the fields you need at an acceptable cost, it is usually the best first option. Responses are structured, so less cleaning is needed, and the data does not break when a page is redesigned.
When public web data helps
Some useful business information is published only on websites, such as a company's services, locations, leadership pages or news. Collecting it can fill gaps that APIs leave. It needs more cleaning, because pages are written for people, not machines.
Cost and maintenance
APIs usually cost money per record or per month but are predictable. Website collection costs less in licences but needs monitoring, because page layouts change and collectors must be updated. Compare the total effort, not just the price.
Compliance for both routes
Whichever route you use, read the terms of use, respect rules on automated access and follow privacy laws that apply to personal data. Keep a record of each source so you can explain where data came from.
Combine sources
The most complete datasets often merge both: structured data from an API as the base, public web data to fill gaps, then validation and deduplication across the combined records.
